Sustainable innovations in green construction

In the ever evolving construction landscape, a transformative movement in green building initiatives is apparent and quite naturally, the need of the hour.  Rapid technological advances and green innovations have lent constant momentum to sustainable construction practices. Construction companies around the world are exploring innovative options to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint, decrease the energy intensity of buildings and create a measurable, positive environmental impact.

Here are 5 sustainable innovations that are making rounds in the green construction circles:

  •           Passive solar power

Passive solar technologies is a system that can be installed during the construction process itself. Unlike the bulky solar panels placed on roofs, passive solar can be installed into windows that let in maximum heat during the day. This technology converts sunlight into usable energy and allows for air movement to heat or cool a home without the usage of mechanical or electrical devices.

The same is applicable to passive solar cooling; wherein shading, thermal mass and natural ventilation is used to reduce heat during the day and store cool air during the night to optimize temperatures.

  • Smart IAQ monitors

IAQ or Indoor Air Quality, refers to the air you breathe when inside. IAQ monitors located inside homes, actively protect occupants by keeping tabs on indoor air quality and warning them about possible quality issues. This is ideal system to install when a resident suffers from pollen or dust mite allergies and asthma. Once notified, proper steps can be employed to filter the air and create a safe breathing space.

  • Smart glass

Imagine a glass that self-adjusts transparency and tint depending on the time of day? Electrochromic glass or smart glass studies natural weather patterns to control indoor climate.  On particularly hot days, the smart glass prevents heat from passing through the window and warming up your home interiors. Similarly, in the case of a storm or when the skies darken, the tint on the windows will reduce in intensity letting available light into the room.

  • Radiant heating and cooling

Taking up lesser space and maintenance than a traditional HVAC system, radiant cooling systems circulates chilled water through pipes embedded in the buildings walls, floors and ceilings. Because water can carry upto 3,400 times more heat than air, radiant cooling is much more energy efficient. Apart from regulating even temperatures, this system also improves air quality by reducing air movement, thus also restricting the movement of dust and allergens.

  • AI powered quantity saving tools

One of the major issues green construction attempts at solving is reducing wastage of materials. The pivotal role quantity surveying plays in achieving sustainable construction goals cannot be overstated. These tools efficiently manage and regulate costs, resources and the overall environmental impact through the entire construction cycle. For eg: integrating advanced technologies, such as BIM (Building Information Modeling), greatly enhances cost estimation accuracy and conducts structured energy performance analysis.

There are phenomenal strides taken by the construction industry to revolutionize sustainability and fast track minimization of the industry’s carbon footprint. The above mentioned are just a few of the technologies that builders across the world are adopting. At B&M Infra, the green movement is a priority. In the near future, we see ourselves as a green construction company constructing energy efficient and eco-friendly projects. Our latest project, named Be.i revolves around being earth intelligent. Adopting some of the above mentioned green innovations, we aim to make Be.i an expansive, sustainable plan that can be adopted across the country.
